India's agricultural sector, the backbone of its economy, has long faced energy insecurity and rising costs. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme aims to address these challenges, but its success depends on effective implementation. Ishan International, in partnership with Rite Water, has demonstrated the power of public-private collaboration by successfully commissioning solar-powered submersible pumps in Maharashtra, a key agricultural state. This initiative empowers farmers with a sustainable energy source that boosts productivity, lowers costs, and supports a greener future.
Under the popular Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) Scheme, Ishan International Ltd. has signed a subcontract with Rite Water Solutions (India) Pvt. Ltd. for the supply, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of agricultural submersible pumps. These pumps are designed to operate on solar power, reducing the dependency on diesel and grid electricity, thereby lowering operational costs for farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
The first batch of 20 solar-powered submersible pumps is currently being installed in Chandwad and Niphad Talukas of Nashik District, Maharashtra. This marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to revolutionize the agricultural sector in India by leveraging renewable energy.
The impact of this initiative extends beyond the economic benefits. By reducing the carbon footprint of agriculture, these solar pumps contribute to improving air quality and preserving the environment.
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) Scheme is an ambitious initiative by the Government of India aimed at reducing the agricultural sector's reliance on diesel and enhancing farmers' incomes through the use of solar energy. The scheme offers central government subsidies of up to 30% or 50% of the total cost for installing standalone solar pumps and solarizing existing grid-connected agricultural pumps. It also allows farmers to set up grid-connected solar power plants of up to 2MW on their barren or fallow land, with the option to sell electricity to local DISCOMs at state-regulated tariffs.
Implemented by designated state government departments, the PM-KUSUM scheme aims to add approximately 34,800 MW of solar capacity by March 2026, with a total central financial support of ₹34,422 crore.
On July 27, 2024, Ishan International and Rite Water jointly organized an event in Chandwad Taluka to celebrate the commissioning of the first two solar-powered pumps under this initiative. The ceremony was attended by a large number of farmers from Chandwad and Niphad Talukas, along with the Director and representatives of Lasalgaon Vibhag Sahkari Kharedi-Vikri Sangh Ltd.
Speaking at the event, Ishan International's Managing Director, Mr. Shantanu Srivastava, expressed gratitude to the Government of India for launching the PM-KUSUM scheme, which has already benefited thousands of farmers across various states. He highlighted Maharashtra's leadership in implementing this scheme and applauded the farmers for their foresight in adopting solar technology on a large scale. Mr. Srivastava also praised Rite Water for its clear vision and commitment to the renewable energy sector and water treatment, emphasizing the company's role in environmental protection.
If similar projects are undertaken nationwide, the impact on the agricultural sector could be monumental. It would not only address energy challenges but also contribute significantly to India’s renewable energy goals.
Ishan International Ltd., a small and medium enterprise (SME) listed on the NSE (Emerge), has established itself as a prominent player in the supply of EPC projects and machinery for renewable energy, the sugar industry, pollution control, and other sectors in India and globally. The company is recognized as a Star Export House by the Government of India and holds ISO 9001:2015 certification from TUV (Nord), underscoring its commitment to quality and excellence.
The successful commissioning of solar-powered agricultural pumps in Maharashtra under the PM-KUSUM Yojna is a testament to Ishan International's expertise and dedication to sustainable development. As the company continues to work alongside government initiatives, it remains committed to driving positive change in the agricultural sector and beyond.
Initial investment in solar pumps is high, but long-term returns are substantial.Government subsidies under the PM-KUSUM scheme make solar pumps more accessible to farmers. Maintenance costs for solar pumps are lower compared to diesel pumps. Challenges include ensuring the quality and durability of the pumps. Regular maintenance and after-sales support are essential to maximize lifespan and efficiency.
The partnership between Ishan International and Rite Water represents a significant step forward in realizing the full potential of the PM-KUSUM scheme. By providing farmers with access to affordable and sustainable energy solutions, this collaboration is not only enhancing agricultural productivity but also contributing to the broader goals of energy security and environmental sustainability.
As more farmers across India embrace solar-powered solutions, the impact of initiatives like PM-KUSUM will only grow, paving the way for a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector.
